I picked up my codex and was surprised that it was softcover. I thought the newly released dexes were all hardcover. At first glance the fluff and the units look cool, but it seems that the flayed ones have taken a hit. Cheaper, but not as scary.

Only the Warhammer fantasy stuff is going to be hardback, 40k is still softback.
As for the codex itself I have to say it is really good, but it seems to be a mix of 40k and fantasy. Lords are like heros and Crypteks are like mages, bunch of dfferent schools of tek to choose from. Also all the use of counters, removing armor, etc. It just seems like it was built with fantasy in mind.
But I still have yet to go all the way through and read everything.

My feelings are mixed. On one hand I love the variety of units and interesting special characters but on the other, the codex feels like it has a lot of odd rules that don't seem like they belong. This is obviously evidence of 6th edition being worked into the codex but until 6th edition is officially out... I will be shaking my head and wonder why anyone would want to deep-strike on their opponent's turn or why I would want to take advantage of preferred enemy on Destroyers. I must hand it to Mat Ward though. For once he didn't go over the top with the units and the codex is actually well worded and gives clear examples of things that may seem confusing at first. It's as if there was someone there to slap him on the wrist the whole step of the way. I also feel that Necrons may not be as competitive as I hoped for. However, I will play them and in time, who knows, maybe 6th edition will put them on top (or Tyranids, yay!)

They sure as hell have a lot of anti-vehicle. Don't have the codex yet, but from those short views I've seen of it in the store, It looks to me that it has something in every FOC to deal with Vehicles. I really do hope this is the start of the death of the parking lot.

I used the new codex on tues and found the same prob as before, get Crons caught up in close combat and you die. All but 2 models hit on I 2. PANTS! And why would you give Destroyers preferred enemy?

I dont get why they have pushed the CC stuff but took away the I of any decent cc units we had... the only boon to this is that wraiths can have whips and so anything in BTB is at I1. WTF is the score with FO? A crazy assault unit that is a lower I than any other assault units!
Lots of anti-armour but thats no use against a green tide ork army or a blob squad guard list or a brood heavy nid list.
At least we now have template weapons.

And why would you give Destroyers preferred enemy? It has been rumored for some time now that preferred enemy will make you re-roll to hit in shooting as well.
