OK, so every time i go into battle my destroyers are the first to go they die so easily they should have 2 wounds.[glow=red,2,300][/glow]

how many do you usually take? because if it is like 3 or just 5 then i could see why. 2 or 3 squads would also help and keeping them within 6 of each other really does wonders, add in a destroyers lord and you've got a pretty powerful formation.
i remember being in a march madness and having a destroyer flank rush, 7 regular destroyers and 3 heavy destroyers flew up the left or right flank and blasted everything one side to the other. str 6 shooting is just really useful for light armor, transports artillery and with 12 shots to 9 shots a squad it'll glance your big scary land raider.
Destroyers are something that also need to be maneuvered right, watch the dangerous terrain, keep them spread apart, and when you have 12 inches to fly away you had best not get assaulted with them. i learn that stuff the hard way.

get on youtube and watch the video by fritz about his cron army, he has some good tactics using destroyers. remember they have a 24" turbo and if they look like they may get assaulted then turbo them away instead of going into combat. yeah you loose a turn of shooting but you will still have your destroyers. a lord is not really needed as they should not be getting into combat and only a hand full of weapons can instakill them so a res orb lord is a waste here.

Destroyers have always been my most valuable unit. Unfortunately, all my opponents know this and tend to go for them ASAP.
I agree with The Outsider, I feel destroyers should have at least 2 wounds... or at least the heavy destroyers anyways. 65 points for what is essentially a mobile lascannon doesn't feel adequate. Typically, when I bring heavy destroyers, it's to pop heavy vehicles from range (now that gauss weapons can't kill) When I do fire, I usually miss or fail to punch, followed by my target firing back and dropping me like nothing.
My only solution to this problem is to bring 3 heavy destroyers and run then as individual units that stay with in 6 inches of each other (so long as you have 3 heavy slots available). That way, when your opponent puts his shots into that one heavy destroyer, you have the others there to grant the WBB roll (as well as more back up fire). I find this more effective than having 1 unit of 3 as 3 destroyers can easily drop to something like a predator or squadron of typhoons.
As mentioned above, maneuvering is also very important.
I have seen and tried out Fritz's "Destroyer Wing" tactic. 15 destroyers is very cumbersome to use and maneuver. Especially when trying to avoid difficult terrain and your opponent brings deep striking or outflanking units. My "bait and switch" unit of 10 immortals and a lord that protects the destroyers from enemy assault usually fails combat and gets swept before they can teleport out (yay 5th ed combat)

you would think that the destroyers size {they are bigger than the necron lord} you would think they would have 2 wounds

@ the deceiver i got a battle force and a lord and i haven't had the money to expand so i only have 3 destroyers but in some situations they are really good (they took down a trigon prime)

destroyers do their job beautifully, and you know wanting 2 wounds is fine, but im going for a stretch and im going to guess that gw will make them 3 wounds a pop. i mean, they are kind of big and with 2 wounds i would expect that on pariahs or immortals.
I do want to have 15 destroyers because str 6 ap 4 really helps. whether peppering monsters, termies, light vehicles or even land raiders. I also would love to get 9 heavy destroyers just so i can fly around 9 lascannons. im not saying to put 9 in a competitive list, but maybe in a fun 1000 point recreational tournament. if i was aiming for competitive, i think 8 destroyers and 4 heavy destroyers would do fine for destroyer bodies.

i have the full compliment of both and only used them in apoc but they scare the poo out of people, but then we are not reliant on just using destroyer wing... i also have cc army based around 9 wraiths and a full compliment of flayed ones, which also scares the poo out of people.. especially when they hide their newly painted melta gun toting squad of vets behind a wood and think "oh yeah no way i can be charged from here" then my wraiths float menacingly through the woods to which their responce usually is "terrain tests and thats got to be dangerous terrain cos they have jetbike movement" i then laugh and point out wraith flight in the dex and usually go muhahaha swiftly followed by the butchery of the squad!! i also have a phalanx with warriors and again a full compliment of immortals
on top of that i can mix and match components from each to make a stronger whole!!

the outsider makes a pretty good point but we still have to remember that fielding a low amount of anything necron will assure its destruction.

@ destroyerlord how many points of necrons do you have? i've always wanted 9 wraiths just for that apoc formation. looks so cool.
have you guys seen that one spearhead formation for jetbikes? i like it. haven't gotten to use it but it looks really really beautiful. i wish there was a destroyer apoc formation.
If there was a destroyer formation for apoc, what would you want it to do?

I really can't see them being 3 wounds. Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to be the same as out HQ... =/

but then the tyranids get very customizable warriors at 3 wounds a pop and can have big fat squads of them. As troop choices to boot. lol makes me jealous.

Yes, but Warriors are only T4 with a 4+ save. They are hardly an unbeatable unit.

put them in a pod with power weapons and lash whips, thats not gonna be easy to take down in one turn. like they have been saying, destroyers go down with some firing dedicated to them.

Look at it this way, the unit of warriors pods in front of you... and sits there. Destroyers/Immortals would rip them apart, even normal Necron Warriors would do some damage, really anything will. Warriors have a reputation for being all big and bad but they really aren't, same for Genestealers, not as bad as everyone things.
But I agree, Heavy Destroyers should at least have two wounds, normal Destroyers should have 1 wound and be like 10 pts. cheaper, or have two wounds and stay the same.
