For those of you who are unfamiliar with the 40k term "Deathstar":
A Deathstar is a single unit of models created to form a very durable, and very effective close combat machine. An example of this would be a tooled out Hive Tyrant combined with 3 guards and a Tyranid Prime with regen. Obviously, this is a tough unit to bring down and can cause a lot of damage in melee (if it can make it there)
So what about the Necrons? Can they create a near unstoppable close combat killing machine despite being a shooting army? I say they can... and it quite possibly could be one of the strongest in 40k. (albeit, probably the most expensive)
Hear me out.
Lets take a look at this combination:
HQ:
Trazyn The Infinite (this guy could be replaced with another HQ but I think he is needed to handle horde CC units)
Overlord - Warscythe, phylactery, mindshackle scarabs, sempiternal weave, res orb, phase shifter.
Royal Court:
Lord - Warscythe, mindshackle scarabs, sempiternal weave, phase shifter.

Total = 995 pts
Nearly 1000 points! but lets take a look at what this can do:
Durability: 6/7 models in the unit posses a 2+ armor save with a 3++ invul save on top of a 4+ resurrection roll. The whole unit contains 11 wounds and is toughness 5. You can also allocate wounds onto the overlord and special character to keep your lords safe.
Close Combat power: What makes this combo truly powerful is its use of mindshackle scarabs. All 7 models have them which means at the beginning of every round of combat, you could potentially control 7 of your opponent's models that are in base to base (so long as they can fail a LD test on a 3D6 which is pretty certain to happen). Those models then do D3 hits to their own unit and you get the benefit of the user's strength and weapons. Plus, you get to swing back with all your strength 7 power weapons which is 19 on the charge.
Mobility: If you want this unit to be mobile, I would suggest bringing a small squad of warriors and purchasing a ghost ark. At the beginning of the game have the warriors jump out and have the deathstar jump in. Since it is a open topped vehicle, you could move 12" jump out 2" then assault 6". If you had a solar pulse in your army then keeping the ghost ark alive will be easier. If you want to really make sure you can get around, I would trade out Trazyn for Obyron so you could veil of Darkness around the board.
So ask your self... what could beat this in a close combat fight? Paladins? they would just get mind controlled and kill each other with their force weapons. A venerable dreadnaught? Ha! stregth 7 +2D6 from the warscythes wound end him. Swarmlord? He would just get instant killed by his own bonesabers before he even attacks. 30 Ork boyz? Perhaps, but with Trazyn they would get cooked.
Obviously, the hefty price tag would probably prevent most people from fielding this... but damn, that's one nasty unit... and we have it!
What are your thoughts?
